Hello everyone!
Once again, I'll start out with deepest apologies for my calloused neglect in blogging, updating and being present here. Life has been super busy the last few months (and will continue through October,) but... I'm here. I'm sitting in my Aunt's office while she finishes some work and I have a bit of time to chat.
I have so many thoughts running through my brain right now... this might sound / read / feel sporadic but I have no other way to get it out.
I feel like I've been really brought face to face with a lot of things going on in the Blogger world right now, as well as in my personal world regarding weight loss. Today I read the Marie Claire article on the "Big 6" bloggers, and I'm battling between being frustrated and offended, to being unsure if it's really all that bad. I personally don't read any of the blogs mentioned in that article. Let me clarify by saying that it's not because I don't want to... it's just that I didn't even know those blogs existed. (Okay, I've totally heard of Carrots N Cake, but I haven't subscribed or taken the time to delve in.) SO. After reading the article that so many of you (and others) were vehemently pissed about... I now want to go through those blogs, read and get to know those ladies. Funny, Marie Claire's article (it seems,) has garnered a new reader for all of those blogs. But then again, I also have a sneaking feeling in the back of my mind that maybe the author of the article wasn't all wrong. (Or was she!) -- Yes, most likely, she was. I spent a good amount of time this afternoon reading through hundreds and hundreds of comments from loyal readers and folks who were flat-out pissed off, sickened and saddened by the article. I can't get in line with those comments personally because I don't know that to be true. But as far as I'm concerned, that's a frack-load of evidence for their side.
/phew.
Okay, in other blog-related news... I read The Anti-Jared's blog post today. It immediately freaked me out, making me think, "Fuck, am I a Paper Tiger?" ... I feel like (particularly compared to our honest, amazing and inspiring Jewlia Goulia,) I have been lately.
I've been conveniently leaving out of my blog my cake-binge episode from about six weeks ago. (Yes, MizFit says there's a difference between a planned indulgence and a binge, but...) This started out as "planned" the day of, and turned into six...SIX pieces of cake. It subsequently turned into the shakeyshakes, the in-my-mouth-bad-taste, and the "I can't sleep because my mind is going 2304980239 miles an hour, holy crap!"
I also let you all believe that I don't eat sugar (98% of the time this is true, but...), when Dan and I both had a piece of cake to celebrate our engagement on Sunday, I decided you didn't really need to know. I admitted that to him, but not to you. I also am pretty sure I don't tell you about the intense food-guilt I experience... all...the...time.
I used to talk about my food addiction, overeating, carb attacks and scale obsession. These days I quietly hide in my busy-assed-schedule, and while my good friends go through horrible bouts with food issues, I'm quiet in the corner, telling them I love them. I don't really relate out loud, and I certainly can't offer up any gems of advice on how to get through it.
The only way I know how to lose weight is to categorically and strictly monitor my food intake. The level at which I do this, particularly compared to some more balanced eaters, could very well seem a bit extreme. I make sure to put it out there to you that I don't like working out, and I don't go to a gym or ride a bike or jump rope (though those last two things I still want to start because they sort of sound fun, though the cold is almost here, so just like this guy is waiting for winter to start getting his shit together, I'm gonna conveniently wait for next spring.)
So where does that leave me? When people I know and love are struggling with weight loss, or more committed to their losing weight, and I watch the things they eat and feel superior to them? That my Mother makes healthy choices in her diet, but when she says she had a peach for a snack or a sweet potato (as Beth does all the time, and she's amazing,) -- I can still hear the little bitchy voice inside my head say, "I would NEVER do that." That when I'm spending time with Wes, and I watch him eat chips and salsa and a piece of pizza, I glare at him, or scold him? (We've had the type of relationship where this behavior from either of us would garner that type of response, and it's not a bad or mean thing between us,) - but still.. why do I feel the need to be his keeper? Why do I feel like it's my job to wag my finger at his little eating indiscretions, and yet if a different friend is going through a full-on, multi-day binge, I can calmly and sweetly tell her that it'll get better? Is it because Wes is my low-carb eating buddy? That we've (somewhat silently but have nevertheless) made a friendly agreement to be each others accountability partner? So, should that make me support him, or kick him in the ass with stern looks and disappointed sighs?
I know, KNOW that different plans work for different people. I know that others are successful while eating more than I eat and being more active than I am. So, maybe it's fear that I really don't do this the right way. That maybe not today or tomorrow, but in a few weeks or months I could easily binge for a week because my body has had it with me. Or my mind will become totally sick of lean meat and spinach hand over fist. Could it be the fear that all the kudos and "Wow's" and "You look great's" that I've gotten over the last few months will only require further and further dedication? That I'm terrified of losing ground? That the very, very last thing I want is to ever be fat again? That I'd rather struggle against food the way I do...forever?
I don't really know where all of this is going, or what I am trying to say. Basically, I'm trying to be a little more transparent. I want you to know that I'm not doing this or working through the Ex Hot Girl blog to be an example, but I feel more like I am part of a community. Like... we're all a big family, and we screw up and live life and breathe and fall and succeed together.
I value and respect each one of you, even though I don't always have time or make time to read/comment/email you. With that, I leave you my pledge:
I, Jennifer Brindley, hereby make the commitment to blog more often, be balls-to-the-wall honest, and stop being a pansy-ass Paper Tiger.
Love,
Jenn

Eat. Stop. Eat. Update and Questions
Okay y'all. So, I got a lot of different responses from you all when I announced my participation in Eat. Stop. Eat. I'm talking WIDE variety of opinions. It was pretty amazing to see how many of you were supportive, curious and also how many of you are already on the program, or some other eating style where you incorporate fasts.
On the other hand, there were a few readers who were skeptical, unsure, and some of you were downright against the idea.
I want to talk about a few things today. First, I'm gonna give you a little update on the program and how it's working for me. Secondly, I want to talk about restriction in eating plans, and what's the deal with that?
So. Update.
I started out really well with the "Eat" part of Eat. Stop. Eat. I mean, I kicked ass at it. I ate and did it well. Big salads, a hot dog, some delicious ice cream, chicken, milk, cereal, whole wheat bread. I didn't restrict my eating and it was amazing. But then I realized I'd forgotten something crucial after a few days. The "Stop." part. I was enjoying eating freely, and forgot I was supposed to schedule in my stops. HA! So. I did my first 24-hour fast on Tuesday and it was amazing. 9pm-9pm, y'all. (I have a really late schedule, so for most of you normal people that'd be more like 6pm-6pm, dinner hour.)
I didn't feel cranky, light headed, or shaky. I felt sort of hungry after being awake for three or four hours, but the feeling passed. I got another slight wave of hunger another four or so hours later, but for the most part it wasn't bad. I drank water and diet soda and I was fine. Then, 9pm came and it was time for dinner, and I had chicken, a little bread and some mashed potatoes. (Had no salad in the house and it was too late to go to the salad bar at the grocery store. I'll be better prepared next time.)
So! Overall I'm looking forward to my next fast (which is right now, actually. No food until 10pm tonight.) It feels amazing. I feel empowered and freed. Which leads me to my next topic: Restriction.
Here are some of the comments I got on the post I did:
Fasting two days a week is not sustainable. Why? Lots of people do it. Dan's grandfather has been doing it for 30 years. I have stacks of books on the subject. It might just not be sustainable for some people, and that's cool.
It seems like a modified version of anorexic behavior. Anorexia is not a behavior, it is a sickness. This program is specifically for healthy adults, and is not for anyone who has eating disorder issues. Fasting has been practiced for centuries. We're just not used to it here because we think we are supposed to eat three to five times a day. Breakfast (break-fast) breaks the fast after we sleep, right? Well, the word dinner actually ALSO means "break fast." And lunch? Didn't even exist until ladies tea became "luncheon," became a full meal we eat sitting down.
I wasn't aware that restricting your food was criteria for a healthy diet. It absolutely is. It's scientific, actually. Eat less, lose weight. I don't get why people are so freaked out by the idea of food restriction. It's not a BAD thing. (If you have eating disorder issues or tendencies, obviously I'm not talking to or about you.) But for those of us who struggle with weight... restricting food (and exercise for those who exercise) is the only way to lose weight.
Not fasting to allow us to make poorer choices on the days we can eat. It just doesn't sound healthy to me. For me, it's not about "poorer" choices. It's about freedom from food psychotic behavior (which is a term I apply to myself and my obsession with numbers, calories, carbs, and the guilt and head issues I get about food.) This week for the first time I actually felt GOOD. I didn't feel guilty when I ate mashed potatoes. I had a Subway sandwich and didn't feel like crap afterward because I ate bread. I made Dan banana bread, and I actually had some of it myself. This program is about allowing me freedom to enjoy food, instead of feeling guilty if I "mess up." It frees me to live my life and not worry about what I'm going to order at a restaurant, and if there's a dry chicken breast and steamed broccoli available or not. It allows me to not sit and loathe and be jealous while I drink a bottle of water at a baseball game as my friends have hot dogs.
The entire time he was knocking other diets and counting calories and such saying that "they wont work." I'm pretty sure he wasn't. In fact, I'm pretty sure he said any of those ways can be good ways to lose the weight, and that there's not a "right way" or a "wrong way." He DID point out how frustrating those other programs can be, and I personally agree. I do not want to be counting points for the rest of my life.
Not once in the video you linked did it say "how" it is supposed to work, only that it will. That's because if he explained all of the how, he wouldn't be able to sell the program. I bought the e-book and I have all the information I need. Can't fault him for not giving it away, can we?
I think you will be upset if it doesnt work and/or you come off of it, and gain it all back. Absolutely! Just like I've been disappointed when I've gained weight back after Atkins, counting calories, doing Weight Watchers, and being a Vegetarian. But all of those options are also fully valid, fantastic eating programs that are totally sustainable and life-changing for some people. It's all about finding the program that works for you as an individual.
I hope this is an april fools joke. Of course a diet like this will work since basically you will eat less, a lot less. ... No, not an April Fool's joke. And yes, diets where you eat less, are the ones that will work. That's the point. Eat less, lose weight. Calories in, calories out. If you think the formula is different from that, you're mistaken. It really is that simple.
I sincerely hope I am wrong in thinking this diet is a great way to start a serious eating disorder. This has actually given me freedom from food issues, and I've seen that feedback from several people who fast. Fasting does not equal anorexia. Seriously.
If you don't like calorie counting then try weight watchers? Weight Watchers IS calorie counting. It's just modified into points. The numbers are smaller but it's the same idea. It's great for some folks, but it just didn't work for me personally. :)
Umm.... why not just eat what you want to eat in moderation and exercise?? I did that for five months and lost five pounds. Literally, was under 1700 calories a day and worked out for an hour three to five days a week. My body needs a little extra boost. Oh, and I hate working out. That too. :)
So for me, here's the thing.
I don't understand why someone who counts calories or points all week, digs into their little bags of celery or noshes on their delicious rice cakes... can say they're not on a restrictive diet. Ummm, you are. In fact, you're restricting your eating all week. AND you're counting numbers while you're doing it. In fact, it doesn't even have to be that kind of an example. Do you sometimes want to eat chocolate cake at a restaurant after your dinner? Do you sometimes say, "Nah, I probably shouldn't." ? That's restricting your intake. That's saying, "Yeah, this probably isn't the best choice for me."
This is just a different approach. It's more flexible so I do NOT have to count points or calories or carbs. I simply cut two days out. So instead of watching my intake all week, counting calories, skipping desserts, staying away from bread, and at the end, having cut 30% of my calories for weight loss... I'm eating what I feel like eating when I feel like eating it (yes, still in moderation,) skipping food for two 24-hour periods, and coming away with a 30% deficit of calories at the end of the week.
Personally, I like option 2 the best.
On another note, I'm going to be in Denver for the next week but I'll try to do a few updates while I'm there!

Just a few notes.
Hey guys.
Sorry I've been sparse in the updates lately. There is a lot of change going on in my life, and I'm finding it hard to concentrate on writing here. :( I'm sure it's just a funk and I'll be over it soon.
One, I am keeping Chile in my thoughts. Hold tight, Hawaii. /sigh... I feel like the end of the world is coming.
Two, you should go check out this post at Eating Journey. I've never related to the term "compulsive overeater" but considering how out of control I feel the last few days, it struck a small chord with me. Though I usually won't overeat or stuff myself every day... I definitely am two things: A fast eater, and a carb addict. I eat SO fast... I rarely put my fork down. I often can finish a meal and struggle to remember what it tasted like. Dan reminds me to eat slower, or to put my fork down every once in awhile, but I can. not. do. it.
I haven't gone back to low carb yet (going to the grocery store today), so that's probably why I feel out of control, when in fact I haven't actually been eating THAT badly. I'm maintaining, in fact, back down to 172.8 today.
Three, I'm looking for a new studio space! Here are a few shots of the place I looked at yesterday:
I'm looking at a few other places this week, but I really, really love this space. Lots of colorful walls, around 1600 square feet, and it's a killer rent! The location is really fantastic as well... it's super close to / basically downtown, and it's only about 8 minutes from my house.
Ta-Ta for now,
~Jenn

Birthday Weekend and The Grammy's.
Well, dammit, I'm not exceedingly happy right now.
Weight = 171
Measurements = Bloated
Face = Broken out as usual
This was Dan's birthday weekend, as I've mentioned. It started out pretty well. I went down to Chicago with my friend Jesse and we ate at a Brazilian Steakhouse called Brazzaz. It was amazing! Most of it was on plan with my low carb eating, except for a few tastes of garlic mashed potatoes and one and a half popovers.
The only picture I got was of the salad bar plate:
Then, a few glasses of wine and the night was good and I felt okay. The next morning, eggs and sausage at the hotel for breakfast, then some coffee.
Then... I came back to Milwaukee and Dan and I went to dinner at Mimmas. Now, if you like Italian food, and you're in Milwaukee, you NEED TO GO there. The food is amazing:
Antipasti Misto:

I got the special... which apparently translates to $38 in chicken. But it was amazing chicken. Breaded, and stuffed with a breadcrumb mixture including spinach, cheese and sun dried tomatoes. Cut into medallions and served with a Gorgonzola cheese sauce. YUM!
Dan got a seafood ravioli:

But yeah, apparently a "special" is more like... special (unusual/interesting) and less special (blue light). :( Seriously, this has been the most expensive weekend!

There was another birthday celebration at the bar, and they had a bunch of cupcakes... they brought one over and lit a candle in it for Dan! SO thoughtful. :)

So, last night, we went to Dan's sister's house for his family birthday celebration. And of course, she made pasta. DAMMIT! She pulled me into the kitchen and asked me before she put in the fat free half and half and cheese and Alfredo sauce out of sweet concern for my eating habits. Unfortunately, the fat and meat is great and good on my eating plan. The pasta is not. They got Dreamfield pasta which is healthier, and it shows on the box something like 5 grams of digestible carbs per serving. In reality, if you look at the side/back of the box on the nutritional information, the net carbs (carbohydrates - dietary fiber) is 36 grams of carbs. I try to keep my daily intake around 20 or less.
So, even though there was a huge salad to start the meal... I had the pasta. Why? Because of GUILT. I felt guilty because:
1. It was Dan's birthday weekend, so I should not make it about me.
2. Dan's sister made this meal and asked me about the healthiness about it, assuming I was still doing low calorie.
3. Given that, I should have made everyone aware that I was doing low carb now. (How can I expect someone to adapt to my eating plan, or provide for it, or understand if I only eat salad, if I don't tell people what's going on before they make dinner?
4. I felt it would be selfish to NOT eat it.
So, I ate it. And then... it was my job to make cake, of course. I decided to do cupcakes because it'd be easier and cuter and when I brought cake over, and it'd be cleaner than forks and knives and serving plates, etc.

And of course, I got tons of rave reviews, and I really wanted one. But instead of eating one like a normal person with everyone there eating one too... I didn't. I upheld the facade of "Jenn the healthy eater girl." (Despite accepting a glass of Sangria that had about 40 grams of carbs, about 36 of which were sugar, I found out.)
So... Dan and I got home and while he was in the bathroom, I cut one cupcake in half and ate half. Like I wasn't going to eat the other half? I ate that too. Then I threw away the evidence. Apparently, I've got a little bit of food issues if I'm secretly eating a cupcake that I MADE on Dan's birthday in the kitchen, in the dark, and shoving the evidence into the garbage.
/sigh.
Okay, quick notes on the Grammy's:
Best Performances: Lady Gaga/Elton John, Pink, Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige/Andrea Bocelli, Zac Brown Band
Worst Performances: Jaime Foxx, Taylor Swift/Stevie Nicks
Good, Not Crap Performances: Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum, Michael Jackson Tribute, Maxwell, Jeff Beck/Imelda May
Drake/Eminem/Lil' Wayne: I wanted to review your performance, but I couldn't hear half of it because of muting out what couldn't be aired on television. Maybe change things up a little bit, or sing different songs. Though, what I did hear was pretty damn good. Oh, and pull up your pants. Seriously. It's got to be time for a new Hip Hop pants trend by now, right?
Beyonce: You were great until you butchered "You Oughta Know." Don't ever do that again. Or, do it, but learn the damn words to the songs you're singing before you sing them.
Bon Jovi: I like you, and you're classic and all, but why are you getting so twangy? I swear you haven't always been so twangy. But you all did a good job.
Zac Brown Band: How did I not know you existed? I think I'll pick up your album.
Y'all, I do NOT get the Taylor Swift thing. At. All. This is a place I'll disagree with my boyfriend (John Mayer,) when he says she's something special and will be around for a long, long time. I don't get it, don't hear or see the talent. DO NOT. I mean, come on. Her performances were less than mediocre. I mean, out of key and boring and crap. FLAT. She was SO FLAT! /ugh. She's a pretty girl, I guess. But John, if you love her so much, why can I only hear her sing 2 bars on Heartbreak Warfare? Admit that it's because everything else she tried to sing, you were tempted to stick sharp objects into your ears. And don't lie to me and say you didn't hear it, because when you sing live, you tend to be sharp all the time. That, plus her flatness... you had to have though she couldn't hear at ALL.
I'm sorry, she did NOT deserve the Album of the Year award. Though Dave Matthews Band is one of the greatest and one of my favorite bands ever... Lady Gaga clearly deserved the award. Yes she's weird, but dammit, that album was awesome, and there were so many singles... she got screwed on that deal, people.
I also don't understand why each artist who performs... ends up doing a full blown Superbowl Halftime performance. Why can't each artist sing ... one song? Wouldn't that, like, make room for more artists to perform? ... ... ...
/end rant.

Why can't each artist sing ... one song? Wouldn't that, like, make room for more artists to perform? ... ... ...
/end rant.

I'm Planning a Binge.
Okee Dokee.
So, I have just got to share this with you all. I'm not sure if I'll regret it, but I'm planning a little binge. I've never done it before. Well, I've never done it with this degree of planning, though I definitely have eaten this way in the past. And now that I think about it, I don't think it actually will qualify as a binge, but it's at least a planned break in my diet.
You all know that I'm a freak of nature when it comes to my eating plan. I'll stick to it come hell or high water, and refuse even the greatest holiday temptation or the sweetest offer of non sugar free gum. I've lost two pounds since being on vacation, and I'm pretty damn proud of that. I'll be doing a post later on losing weight (or simply maintaining it) while traveling.
Anyhoo. I should back up and explain WHY I feel the need to do this.
I used to work at the most awesome place ever. In high school, I worked at TCBY. If you don't know what that is, I'm really sorry. It stands for "The Country's Best Yogurt." And that's the damn truth. I worked there for a few years, and it was delicious. I seriously hope some of you know what TCBY is, because I'd hate to be alone in my obsession with their yogurt. So. I've been craving and craving and craving it. I'm not normally a sweets person. I don't go nuts over ice cream usually (though I do have my favorites: Mint Chocolate Chip or Coffee Ice Cream... yum! Oh! Or Peppermint. That's the greatest thing ever.) But because I used to work there, I figure there's also some kind of wiring in my brain that associates it with happy feelings.
So for the past six weeks I can't stop thinking about White Chocolate Mousse. With mini chocolate chips. And Golden Vanilla with chopped peanuts.
Here's the trouble: a) My diet involves no dairy or sugar. (Well, shit.) b) There aren't any TCBY's in Denver or Milwaukee. Except... at the airport. YAY for the airport!
So I'm actually asking my parents to drop me off at the airport an HOUR early. This, so I can go to the TCBY, order something fabulous and sit and eat it really slowly and savor the experience. And then, I still will have time to order another flavor if I want to. I'm serious about this, people. I'll be sharing pictures.
Many of you are probably thinking I'm insane, and that's okay. We all know I'm a lunatic. But you're probably like, "Umm, Jenn? A half cup of low fat yogurt is NOT a binge, and it's barely a cheat, mmmkay?" Yes, I know. It's simply a huge break from my very specific diet plan. It's just a big deal to me.
...But you guys? It doesn't end there. 'Cause I can't stop thinking about Taco Bell.
So, of course, I've decided that I want to go get Taco Bell with Dan when I get home. I want a bean burrito with no onion, a cheese quesadilla and a crunch wrap and a super bell grande nacho deluxe or whatever it's called. Now we'll see if I have the guts to follow through with the Taco Bell idea when I actually get home, or if I'll feel satisfied and guilty enough over the yogurt to not do it.
I know, I know, I shouldn't feel "guilty" over something like that. But, I will. I mean, it's been a vacation full of compliments and my head is huge now, especially 'cause you all are so damn sweet and supportive. But I still am not to my goal. I'm still overweight. I just happen to carry my weight fairly well, and I'm blessed with decent proportions. But I know how I feel and that the beginnings of muscle definition I have in my legs and the smaller waist I'm enjoying are only whispers of what I'm capable of. I know I have more fat to lose, and I'll be more comfortable at that smaller size. I still can't fit into those size 8's. :)
But then again, they say it's "okay" to cheat. And I feel like it's sort of a reward for my hard work, and it's food I miss. But, on the other hand, they also say you should have NON food rewards. Well, I shop my face off and totally have no self control when it comes to just buying what I feel like I want to wear or getting a pedicure if I want one. I'm a spoiled brat. So, I just get confused and right now I want to stop writing about this because I'm sure you're confused too.
My point is: I want TCBY and Taco Bell.
So! I wanted to update you all with my nuttiness and see if you have ever planned a binge. Yeah, I guess this is only counting as a pseudo-binge if I do the Taco Bell thing, but dammit, I REALLY want to.
Mmmm, Taco Bell.

Da Stinkin' Holidays.
I first want to thank y'all for your comments regarding the 30-day shred! I'm going to get started on it Friday. :) Also, several of you darlings asked what it is and how you can get the deets. I'm happy to share the information.
Jillian Michaels, of The Biggest Loser, is a crazy awesome personal trainer, body burning, muscle ripping, fat melting genius. Well, that's my opinion, at least. She put out a video called the 30-Day Shred. She says you can lose up to 30 pounds doing the video in one month. So. I got it, and haven't actually DONE it. Like, done it 30 days running. And I'd like to.
Don't be scurred. There are 3 different levels, so if you're not a fitness buff (as I am totally not either) you can still do the vid and then increase your level as you get stronger!
I got mine at Amazon.com, and you'll probably find a good deal there or on eBay. YAY!
Well, my first piece of advice to you guys should have been... DON'T go shopping the day before Thanksgiving, because it's a mad-house. But, I made that mistake today and it's too late anyway.
BUT. What I can do, since some of you have asked, is give you guys some tips on how to avoid overdoing it at Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow!
1. Remember that it's a Holiday, and it's OKAY to have a little bit of a treat. In fact, MizFit says it's okay to go for it and enjoy yourself, so if you don't feel like stressing out, skip the next 7 things I'm going to say and visit her blog for some other good tips for Turkey Day! (Everyone should do that anyway.)
2. Remember that a little bit of a treat is something like one piece of pie. Not the WHOLE pie. Pumpkin is the healthiest option, as opposed to apple, cherry or mincemeat. :)
3. Keep in mind the plate trick: Fill half your plate with salad, 1/4 with meat, 1/4 with starch. For me I do stuffing because it's my favorite. If you want a taste of everything, do tiny portions of each (stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes) but don't go past that 1/4 of your plate.
4. White meat is leaner than dark meat, and don't eat the skin! :)
5. Don't forget to drink lots of water.
6. Pass on the Eggnog. Just one 8 ounce serving of regular Eggnog has around 343 calories! If you can't say no, drink a lite Eggnog, and only fill up the glass half-way. Then fill the remaining half of the glass with skim milk. You'll get the taste of the egg nog and you won't overdo the liquid calories.
7. Eat a little bit before you go to dinner so you won't be tempted to overdo it.
8. When you're doing the horderves ahead of time, stick to raw veggies, take it easy on the dip and go for lean meats like turkey.
Also...
Don't forget about your pets. Give them a special treat or a funny hat or something.

Smoke a pipe or drink some coffee! Okay, that's not exactly healthy, but I can't say not to do it if you wanna do it.

Drink in moderation. Your family is watching, people.

And above all, remember to have fun, and that it's okay to be cheesy! It's the holidays! Hug people. Tell your family and friends you love them. Wear a terrible sweater if you want to. Play with the kids. Shave off your beard to only show a really awful mustache. Okay, well don't do that one, but ...Live it up!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

My mouth is open, shove some food in there.
Yeah. Garble, garble, snarfle face, Munchie McMuncherson, YARRRRRRRRRRNCH!!!!!!!!!
That's been me for the past few days. My weight has stayed the same, maybe one pound up. I'm right around 191 as of this morning (though to be honest I haven't weighed myself naked in the morning for at least a week). I have a problem, and I can't figure it out.
I can't stop eating.
And it's not about being ravenously hungry, you guys. It's not even about being moderately hungry. I'm just eating because "oh, why not, sure I'll whip up some eggs with mushrooms and a bit of avocado while you heat up your leftovers" or "Yeah, Olive Garden soup and salad sounds good, let's do it!" or, "Yeah, I'm gonna sit here and watch Dexter and shove my fist into this open box of Raisin Bran because it's sitting by the table."
I'm not eating unhealthy things, though I'm eating more bread than I should be... but calorie wise I'm still at weight loss numbers. It's not like six months ago where I found myself at Walgreens, buying ice cream and whatever the crap else junk food I could get my hands on to take home and shove in my face. But I'm eating when I'm not hungry, and that's really pissing me off.
I can't figure out what it is. I've never really been an "Am I eating because I'm bored?" kind of person. Sometimes I'll eat if I have an icky taste in my mouth - usually I like to drink Diet Coke when I do. But... hellooooo brainiac, brush your teeth! I should just brush my teeth more.
My other problem is that I've been tasting too much. I'll have a "taste" of cookies I bake for Dan, or a "taste" of cereal, or "just five crackers with margarine." But that's a huge problem for me. It only awakens my taste buds and makes me want more.
Here are some rules I really need to stick to if I'm gonna be successful with my eating to lose:
The one thing I've really been good about is "No drinking." Now, it's not because I think drinking is bad or anything, in fact I QUITE enjoy it. But it's because:
I just need to go back on the plan I was on a few months ago. I dropped a lot of weight, and it felt awesome. I just creep back into this frame of mind where my subconscious goes, "Yeah, you lost weight, your fat pants are too big for you, so you can cheat here and there."
Well, SCREW YOU, subconscious! I want THESE pants to be loose on me, and I do NOT do well with cheating. I can't have balance in my life. It just doesn't work for me.
;)

Here are some rules I really need to stick to if I'm gonna be successful with my eating to lose:
1. Don't taste.
2. Eat at least one big salad as a meal each day.
3. Don't eat carbs after breakfast. (SERIOUSLY.)
4. Drink lots of water.
5. Brush my teeth if I feel inclined to nibble.
The one thing I've really been good about is "No drinking." Now, it's not because I think drinking is bad or anything, in fact I QUITE enjoy it. But it's because:
Though I miss getting drunk once in awhile, I'll tell you that. I went home in August for my birthday and didn't get drunk once the entire time I was there, which for a week of socializing is a huge thing for me. I had 1/4 of a beer at my birthday and just put it down. Wasn't feelin' it. Lately I've been wanting to just have a night where I can enjoy the glorious effects of alcohol with some friends and let that be that. I might just want to do a night with a bottle of wine. I just need to let it wash over me and pass out so I don't hit the, "ooh, hungry for TOAST" phase. We'll see.
1. Empty calories.
2. Lowers the inhibitions, which means I'm more likely to go to The Greasy Spoon for a bar close breakfast, or make biscuits and gravy or something.
I just need to go back on the plan I was on a few months ago. I dropped a lot of weight, and it felt awesome. I just creep back into this frame of mind where my subconscious goes, "Yeah, you lost weight, your fat pants are too big for you, so you can cheat here and there."

Cereal Guilt.
Yeah, I ate two bowls of cereal for dinner tonight, and I actually feel guilty about it. I've hit the point where I have lost a bit of weight, and now kinda look sorta good, and my boyfriend is like, "Oooh, BABY!" And I feel like I should be able to eat cheesecake and donuts and pizza.
I almost ordered pizza for dinner. Now, I don't like pepperoni pizza or anything like that... I'm a huge fan of light sauce, light cheese, heavy veggie pizza with thin crust. The kind that's only around 150 to 180 calories for one slice. But I still didn't order it. I had some hot and sour soup for dinner, then about an hour and a half later ate two bowls of cereal. It wasn't Trix or anything, it was basically Special K. But, still. This is what happens when I don't have any salad left in my house. I need to go to the grocery store tomorrow.
At least I didn't dig into the cookie dough I have in the fridge. (I'm making Dan cookies as a surprise tomorrow!)
SO! No real news to pass on. No weight change in the past few days. I had a pre-wedding photo gig on a boat tonight, and I can just tell you guys, I'm SUPER sick of this rainy weather. Now, I love the rain. But NOT when I'm working. Not being able to take photos outside, in what I do for a living (social event photography) - it sucks!!!!! I got a few of the folks to go out onto the deck of the boat tonight, but it was really drizzling, with the wind from the movement of the boat, I couldn't keep anyone out there long, let alone keep myself out there (equipment + wearing glasses)... but I do love this shot:

But by the time I could get the Bride and Groom out, the wind was really blowing and the light was virtually gone. I love this picture, it's so funny because it shows exactly how the night was outside:

((sigh.))
So, I thought I'd share some recent photos of me doin' my photo thang:
My Fongsphere makes me look SOoooo pro:

A pretty clear illustration of my relationship with groomsmen:

I'm a Bridal gown and veil watcher/protector:

I'm a "show-em-how-it's-done" kinda girl:

I'm a "kissing when they clink their glasses" rule explainer:

I'm a straight-up-dork:

I'm hard-core dedicated to getting the shot:

Nothing else to report y'all. I'm looking forward to the next eleven days. No photo shoots or weddings until the 12th! Maybe I can actually, I don't know... clean my house or go to the gym.

A Pudgy Gut is the New Hot.
...Only if you're a guy, though. Sorry ladies. We got royally screwed on this deal.
The NY Times published an article a few weeks ago that I've been meaning to blog on. Well, today's the day.

Okay, WHAT????
Guys now get a free pass to have a gut because it's "prissy" to be in shape all of a sudden? They can't be serious. I'm about to punch someone. My friends and I were talking about this at my birthday party, and I went off into a string of expletives, I was so annoyed. I kept saying, "I swear I'm blogging about this bullshit tomorrow!!!" ...And of course my guy friends all started sticking their bellies out and saying "I'm the hottest guy on earth." Buttholes.
Though there's a backbone of truth in this, I won't get into the male super stars who are fat, bald, unattractive (by conventional terms) etc, etc. I still think this article is just insane. They go on to say:
Oh, really?
Wow. That's news. Seriously, do you even need to say that? This article isn't titled, "Newsflash: Women, it's okay to have muffin tops. In fact, it's the new sexy thing!" or "Muffin tops are the new runway accessory!"
I think women are going to be forever held to impossible standards. Will there ever be an end in sight?
The NY Times published an article a few weeks ago that I've been meaning to blog on. Well, today's the day.

“I sort of think the six-pack abs obsession got so prissy it stopped being masculine,” is how Aaron Hicklin, the editor of Out, explains the emergence of the Ralph Kramden. What once seemed young and hot, for gay and straight men alike, now seems passé. Like manscaping, spray-on tans and other metrosexual affectations, having a belly one can bounce quarters off suggests that you may have too much time on your hands.
“It’s not cool to be seen spending so much time fussing around about your body,” Mr. Hicklin said.
And so guys can happily and guiltlessly go to seed.
Okay, WHAT????

Women have almost never gotten a pass on the need to maintain their bodies, while men always have, said Robert Morea, a personal fitness trainer.

Almost puked.
So, I have a problem.
There are certain things I just can't eat/drink/consume in the morning. Tea is one of them. The other is multivitamins. For some reason, unless I have a meal in my stomach, I just can't do it.
The other day I had a yogurt and half a granola bar for breakfast. Then I took a multivitamin and a green tea pill. About 15 or 20 minutes later I felt super nauseous and ran to the bathroom. I dry heaved and spit a bunch of saliva, but luckily didn't puke. I was THISCLOSE though.
I think I'm gonna need to start taking my vitamins after lunch from now on.
On another note, I wanted to respond to a comment I got from Roxanne. PS, thank you everyone for all your comments. I freakin' love them and you guys make my day, so thank you again.
So, Roxanne posted this comment in response to my recent blog post 82 pounds.
Don't you think it might be a little self-destructive to focus on the past. You could diet down to 115 and wouldn't look anything like that...I'm not saying you'll look worse, but different, even better I think.
Why not just eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full - No whites: white flour, sugar, white rice, potatoes, dairy or alcohol. Nothing from a box, can or wrapper. One cheat meal per week.
First of all Roxanne, I love, LOVE her name. Just had to get that out of the way. :)
So, I don't think it's self destructive to focus on the past. This isn't THAT long ago - the skinniest me (in adult years) was in the last four and five years. Focusing on what I used to look like gives me motivation and encouragement that this is NOT impossible. It reminds me that I am the only one standing in my own way of being at a weight I'm happy at. I've been there once, I can absolutely do it again with hard work and dedication.
I also don't know that I'll "never" look like I did. Why would someone think I wouldn't? Sure, I'm four, five years older. But... that's not a huge span of time. Everyone changes a little bit from year to year, but it's not as if I'm 40 and looking, wishing, longing desperately for my 20's body and expecting unrealistically to be that girl again. I think it's perfectly and reasonably achievable.
And once again, I'd like to reiterate what I said in an older post about fat acceptance, that it's OKAY to not like where I am. I don't find any problem with whatever motivation you use as your motivation. If you find something that will help you, motivate you, drive you to be healthier, lose weight and fit into those size 10 pants if that's what you want to do, why the crap is that a bad thing?
Also, the food she mentioned is pretty much what I'm doing, except I do have yogurt so I can maintain some healthy calcium intake, as well as using canned tomatoes with Italian seasonings in lieu of salad dressing. :)
In fact, there are LOTS of great reasons to make low fat yogurt a daily part of your diet, y'all.
- One 8-ounce cup of plain low-fat yogurt provides around 400 milligrams (mg) of calcium, more than the 300 mg in an 8-ounce glass of milk.
- Yogurt also has as much potassium as a banana and as much protein as an egg or ounce of meat.
- The live bacteria in yogurt help in digestion and protect you against other harmful bacteria.
:)
So, Roxanne, thanks for your comment - I do appreciate it! And for everyone else who comments I really do love to read your thoughts, and it's great to know we're all out there in this journey together. :)

Dontcha, baby? Dontcha?
Dontcha just love it when you've been eating badly, then turn it around, and watch the water weight fall off?
214 to 211.4 this morning. I love that. I freaking love it. LOVE it. Now, of course I realize if I saw that every morning, it would roughly equate to my losing 90 pounds by this time next month, and that would just be assuming I live through that kind of abrupt and insane weight loss. It's not even possible. (...Is it? I don't think so. Unless you chop off body parts.)
But, there's some kind of sick satisfaction I get from seeing numbers on the scale plummet.
Oooh, plums.
So, I should probably share my eating plan with you guys. Should I? Yeah.
Breakfast: Coffee, yogurt, granola bar
Lunch: Big salad, tuna with fat free cottage cheese instead of mayo
Dinner: Huge salad (if no tuna at lunch, add grilled chicken here)
Snack 1: Baby carrots with or without ranch
Snack 2: (if hungry) 1 banana
Now, the protein will vary- whether I decide to have tuna at lunch time or chicken on my salad at dinner. Other variables will be what exactly I put on my salads, ie: olives, artichoke hearts, peppers, peas, sliced almonds, Romano cheese, etc. The goodies I put on the salads will boost my "good fats" for the day.
Have I mentioned I begrudgingly am eating turkey and chicken again? Still can't do red meat and I can't do pork for some reason, but chicken and turkey are back on the menu. Dammit!
Oh, here's a great tip. If you're gonna use cheese in something, use a strong one. My favorites are: Parmesan, Romano, Swiss, Gorgonzola. That way you can really taste the cheese and you can use less. Also those really strong cheeses are pretty low in calories. 2 tbsp of the shredded Romano I use is only like, 15 calories. Parmesan is the same way.
So, this way I'm shoving tons of veggies into my face. I literally have it PLANNED to just do the salads. I have five bags of lettuce in my fridge.
Plus unlimited Diet Coke, Water and Coffee. I have a 1 liter bottle I fill up twice a day with water, so I am making sure to get my hydration in. I have multi-vitamins I've yet to really start taking - I hate them. Also, of course crystal light and diet green tea is unlimited. Plus green tea boosts your metabolism, so they say!
I can't wait to fit into a size 8 again.
:) <3

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
I've eaten about five of these things while visiting in Colorado, and they're freakin' delicious! They are my Mom's concoctions (toasted, with creamy PB and peach jelly.) YUM!
So... It's been an awesome trip. I have a few more days to go yet (I leave on Wednesday night to go back home.)
My food intake has been moderate... I think I'm doing better than I did the last time I was here.
Monday - Dinner - big salad with hard boiled egg, tomato and croutons.
Tuesday - Taco Bell bean burrito with no onion, cheese quesadilla and mac and cheese from the KFC menu. Then Chili's for dinner, 1/4th bean burger, salad, two margaritas.
Wednesday - PB&J sandwich, kick ass veggie sandwich at the Spicy Pickle, iced tea
Thursday - PB&J sandwich, leftover chili's. Three beers, one martini, one slice of artichoke and spinach pizza
Friday - PB&J sandwich, Olive Garden for dinner (salad, breadsticks, mushroom stuffed ravioli with roasted tomato cream sauce), a ridiculous number of Coors Light's (shared three pitchers with Wes and Jesse)
Saturday - Brother's Graduation Party: One veggie dog w/mustard and sauerkraut, one black bean burger with cheese, lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup and mayo, handful of doritos, handful of organic tortilla chips with guacamole, handful of black and green olives, one piece graduation cake. I broke my vegetarianism for a four inch strip of Brisket made from super organic free range meat. A variety of veggies and fruits. That night was Wes' birthday party where I had something like five or six Pineapple Vodka/Sprite Zero's, some bean dip with tortilla chips and a roll with butter.
Sunday - PB&J (best hangover food, seriously) - big salad again, watermelon, tortilla chips with beans. Three tawaka bombs, 10 coors lights, drunk again.
So, it hasn't been too bad. I just really went nuts with the drinking this weekend. It's so funny, I don't drink in Milwaukee very much unless we have like, "margarita night" with friends once in a blue moon. But when I come home, it's a party all the time. Don't worry, I always have a Designated Driver, or I stay over at the person's house I'm visiting with. :)
My working out has, of course, taken a slight nosedive into nearly nonexistent. I brought the Zumba DVD's as I mentioned before. (Don't really like them that much to be honest with you guys, but I'll talk more about it later.) I did Zumba on Wednesday, then helped a friend wash wallpaper glue off his walls for 3 hours on Thursday, then helped my Dad paint on Friday, so I got some good activities in. After that though, I haven't done anything else. I was thinking about running outside tomorrow night or something. I haven't run in awhile, and it would be nice to run toward the park to see how far I can go. (I used to run when I lived at home.)
SO! I don't know what the plans are for the rest of the week, per se, but they should be winding down. I know I don't want to drink tonight... I'm getting too old for this shit.

Cookies and Dinner Mints and Cake Bars, Oh, CRAP!
Yeah, I had a wedding and two graduation parties this weekend! I ate a crapload of fruit, but I also ate a crapload of pasta salad, cookies, cake bar things and some wedding cake too. So, big chocolate covered kudos to those of you who went to a variety of festivities this weekend and didn't cave in. Me? I'm totally the "well, it's here and I'll do a tiny plate and have a little bit" kind of girl. Plus, since I don't eat any meat (other than fish) - I skip what might be a healthier wrap with turkey or something and instead the baked goods are safe for me.
It's tough to find a balance.
So! I'm heading back to the gym tonight. I'll post something about it here later! :)
Also, I've been wanting to post this video that my friend Hanlie posted. I can't wait for this movie!

I've Lost My Damn Mind.
So, I mentioned earlier that I had a big announcement for the day. I have decided to do something I've never done before, and I'm a little nervous. If any of you guys have succeeded, tried, failed or otherwise done what I'm about to do, I would love to hear your experiences.
I'm doing a five-day Raw Food Cleanse.
Now, it's supposed to be seven days but I'm going with five the first go-round. I figure if I make the goal a teenie bit smaller, I'll be less disappointed in myself if I don't go for 7 days and only make it for 5. :)

So let me tell you a bit about it:
I got the information from perusing Fertile Healthy's blog and clicking on her mention of the Green Smoothie Blog. There, I read about the Raw Divas and went to their website.
Now, I know when you go to the Raw Divas website it LOOKS like a typical "diet sale" website and that they might be trying to hook you into paying a crapload of money for diet tips you don't need. But, this detox program information is TOTALLY FREE. I signed up for it, and started getting some e-mails right away. They send you preparation e-mails, and are with you every step of the way.
Being that it's a free program, I'm going to share some (not all) of the information here and encourage you to sign up if you think it's something you'd enjoy doing. I'm also going to document my progress with it through the next week here on my trusty ole blog.
All the tools they give you are so awesome. There's a forum where you can share your experience, ask questions and get tips. There's a comprehensive e-book with all the info on the detox. There is a food and fitness journal for the detox as well as a detox tracker you can put on your fridge.
Now, I guess I should back up for any of you who don't know what a "Raw" lifestyle is. Raw Eating is exactly that. Eating foods that are raw and straight from nature's garden. That includes fruits and veggies. No store bought juices, no bread, eggs, cheese, milk, meat, or processed foods of any kind. For me that also means no coffee or soda, which will be REALLY difficult. It should also mean no cigarettes but I don't have the strength to give up everything. I'd actually probably have a heart attack if I tried. :)
So! It begins with a 24-hour fast on Monday night at 6pm until 6pm Tuesday evening. Then, Tuesday evening I will break into my eating with a mono-fruit meal (one type of fruit, as much as I feel I need.) Then, will continue the next 4 days with just raw, delicious, crunchy fruits and veggies. It'll include fruit, veggies, salads, smoothies and raw soups. The salads can't have oil, vinegar, dressing or any of that. I can make dressings with fruits and veggies blended up, or do fresh fruit sliced on top of the lettuce and veggies.
SO. I'm nervous and really hoping I can do it. I think it would be awesome to really feel "clean" inside my body and refresh myself with a nice, crisp, crunchy, juicy, healthy few days of eating.
Oh, and lotsa water.
So! That's the big, (long winded) announcement. I'll keep you guys posted on what I'm eating. I also wanted to try out some fun "Rawcipies" to make it a little more fun and interesting.
Also... I'm not really thinking of doing a Raw Lifestyle after this (I'd probably get really bored) but THIS gives me reason to give it a second thought. (Click the link there for a bunch of before and afters of people who "Go Raw."
This is a before and after with Jo Thomas. Her story is on the link above, and you can visit her blog here.

Or this girl, Angela Stokes, who is my favorite raw foodist, who is beautiful and I think from New Zealand ('cause she's got my favorite accent, EVER, just like Missy Higgins...) She lost 105 lbs in her first year of being RAW.

Visit her blog/website here.
It's not the first time I've considered the Raw Lifestyle... I just don't know that I could do it full time.
The Sunny Raw Kitchen talked in a recent blog post about how much she and her husband typically go through in fresh produce a WEEK:
* 35 lbs apples
* 25 lbs oranges
* 15 lbs bananas
* 8 lbs lemons and limes
* 5 lbs of fruits (depending on what's available)
* 20 lbs carrots
* 4 lbs celery
* 2 or 3 lbs lettuce
* 3 lbs greens (spinach, kale, swiss chard, etc.)
* 3 lbs tomatoes
* 3 lbs avocados
* 2 lbs beets
Plus all the other odds and ends, such as peppers, cucumbers, zucchinis, cauliflower, broccoli, green onions, fresh herbs, sprouts, etc...
WOW.

* 35 lbs apples
* 25 lbs oranges
* 15 lbs bananas
* 8 lbs lemons and limes
* 5 lbs of fruits (depending on what's available)
* 20 lbs carrots
* 4 lbs celery
* 2 or 3 lbs lettuce
* 3 lbs greens (spinach, kale, swiss chard, etc.)
* 3 lbs tomatoes
* 3 lbs avocados
* 2 lbs beets
Plus all the other odds and ends, such as peppers, cucumbers, zucchinis, cauliflower, broccoli, green onions, fresh herbs, sprouts, etc...
WOW.

Artichoke and Asparagus Pasta
I know it's been a long time since I've done a recipe, so here we go! I made a delicious pasta dish tonight and I wanted to share it with you guys.
1 red bell pepper, sliced and chopped
1/2 bunch asparagus
10 cherry tomatoes, cut in half
1 can medium or small artichoke hearts, drained
1 tbsp butter, margarine, or olive oil
1 tbsp chopped garlic
2 servings whole wheat thin spaghetti
Boil a large pot of water and blanch asparagus for 3-5 minutes or until just tender. Set aside.
Cook noodles according to package directions.
Put bell pepper, tomatoes and artichoke hearts in a skillet on medium heat. Add butter and garlic, coat. Saute for around 5-6 minutes or until veggies are heated. Chop the asparagus and add to the veggie mixture.
Pour veggies over pasta. There should be enough liquid in the pan to keep the pasta pleasantly moist. If not, drizzle a bit more olive oil on top.
VERY delicious, light, refreshing and flavorful.
Enjoy!

Jenn's Light Veggie Pasta and Garlic Roasted Potatoes
Okay, so I know that I shouldn't be eating potatoes and pasta in one sitting, but I decided to live a little bit. Dan wanted to do a romantic night of cooking a badass dinner for both of us and renting Changeling.
Well, his idea for steak sounded awful to me, particularly since I don't eat red meat. He wanted roasted garlic new potatoes and asparagus. I agreed as long as he went to the store and got the asparagus and picked up some thin wheat pasta for me.
Jenn's Light Veggie Pasta
1/2 green bell pepper, sliced
1/2 red bell pepper, sliced
1 cup broccoli heads, bite sized pieces*
1 cup cooked asparagus spears, cut into bite sized pieces*
2 servings thin whole wheat pasta
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp chopped garlic
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp Italian seasoning
*the asparagus and broccoli can either be raw and sauteed with the rest of the veggies, or if you do microwave pouches, add them just before putting the mixture of all veggies onto the cooked pasta.
Spray a pan with nonstick cooking spray. Coat chopped veggies (except for asparagus and broccoli if using pouch cooking) with extra virgin olive oil. Put the veggies into the pan on medium heat. When the veggies start to warm up, sprinkle with black pepper, Italian seasoning and mix in the garlic. Pour water into pan and cover, steaming for 10 minutes or until veggies are tender.
Meanwhile, boil noodles in a pot until they are at your desired tenderness.
Drain the noodles when finished, pour veggies on top and voila! Top with light butter and Parmesan cheese for a nice extra flavor.

Jenn's Garlic Roasted New Potatoes
12 new potatoes (gold or red)
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp dried onion flakes
1 tsp parsley
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp black pepper
Preheat oven to 450. Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Wash potatoes and cut into bite-size pieces (I do eighths.) Put the pieces in a bowl and stir in the olive oil until pieces are all coated. Mix in all the seasonings and stir until evenly coated.
Put the potatoes on the baking sheet and cover it with aluminum foil. Bake for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes, remove the top sheet of aluminum foil and put back into oven for another 15 minutes to get the outside nice and crispy.
Enjoy! :)

Cheesecake Factory...
It IS possible to go to the Cheesecake Factory and reach your goals.
Dan and I decided to go to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner tonight. My absolute favorite meal is the Bang Bang Chicken and Shrimp. Now, since I'm grossed out by beef and chicken right now, I decided to modify the order and get it only with shrimp. I even had some bread too.
The key is moderation. I ate 1/2 my meal, and drank water and Diet Coke. And NO cheesecake. The waiter came after our meal and was like, "Here's the grand finale!" and tried to hand us the dessert menus. I said, "No, we're actually good without dessert." He looked all heartbroken, and I think his lip might have actually started to quiver. "No cheesecake? Really?" -- "No, thanks though."
Though it's okay to have a cheat day once in awhile, eating this delicious meal was plenty enough for me. He took my plate to box up and said, "Holy cow, it looks like you cut this directly down the middle!" I said, "Yeah, I'm a little bit psycho."
And now I have a yummy lunch for tomorrow! :)
Here's the breakdown:
The Cheesecake Factory Bang Bang Chicken And Shrimp
1/2 serving
650 calories
44g fat
21mg cholesterol
467mg sodium
56g carbohydrate
18g sugar
5g fiber
13g protein
The Cheesecake Factory Bread And Butter
3 pieces bread with one pat butter
286 calories
13g fat
35g carbohydrate
7g protein
On the workout front, I've been successful with working out at least 30 minutes per day for the last week! I weighed in this morning (I won't share the number, but it's good...) - even though I wasn't supposed to. I was feeling smaller, and wanted to confirm. Lack of movement and embracing my laziness definitely was holding me back. I really can say that it's activity that helps, because eating right wasn't doing it on its own. Though I was working out a few days a week, the key is really to be active every day.
Here's what I've been doing:
Monday - Pilates for weight loss - 30 minutes
Tuesday - Zumba - 1 hour
Wednesday (start of the challenge) - Candlelight Yoga - 30 minutes
Thursday - Zumba - 1 hour
Friday - Jillian Michaels DVD Shape Up Front - 30 minutes
Saturday - Wii Fit - 30 minutes
Sunday - Jillian Michaels DVD Shape Up Back - 30 minutes
Woo-hoo! I'm actually (dare I say it...) excited for weigh in on Tuesday!
And I'm happy about the challenge. It's really, really pushed me to stay active. I hope it sticks through Easter! :)

Caloric Intake Wakeup Call
I saw this on a thread at Livestrong.com where I frequently lurk. It is quite eye opening and somewhat confusing, particularly to me... someone who obsesses to stay between 1400-1800 calories a day. I know I've posted about this issue before, but my daily caloric maintenance is something around 2200 calories, and should still be around 1400 a day to lose two lbs per week. That means I should be consuming the amount of calories it takes to feed a healthy, growing child.
----------------------------------------------------------
Although it was inspired by a recent post, I don't want anyone to think that I might be bashing those who ask about relatively low caloric goals. Rather, I think that some real-world examples might just give you an idea of where you stay above, calorie-wise.
All of these recommendations are straight from doctors, or where applicable, vets.
A 22 pound cat

Calorie recommendation for weight maintenance - 660 cals
Moderately active 1 year old human child

Calorie recommendation for healthy growth - 1300 cals
Average adult coma patient

Calorie recommendation for weight/health maintenance - 2400 cals
(American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
Alehmer (the guy in the middle)

Exercise Days - 4692
Rest Days - 3942
(Based on John Berardi's calculator, set for maintenance)
189lbs lean mass
2x exercise sessions daily
While you probably won't need as much as me, please eat more than a housecat or small child!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So! For those of you who are counting or recording calories... what is your intake? I'm just curious. And does this information sway your decision? For me, it still doesn't change what my eating looks like.
On that note, here's my little chartadoodle for lately:

Self Sabotage and Other Oddities...
So, every time I go to the gym, it's packed. The gym I go to is very nice, and hugely popular. And every time I go, I see people drive in, and circle the parking lot several times trying to find the closest parking space to the gym.
... Why is that? Seriously. We're coming to the gym to work out, move around and get healthy. So what is a walk worth a dozen or two car widths to get through the front doors? I pull into the first open parking space within a reasonable distance (not the furthest from the front doors, but I don't do the rounds.) And... I just don't get why people make a close parking space such a big deal.
So, the other part of this post is about self sabotage. I know I've blogged previously about how a waitress sabotaged me with free carrot cake, but I'm talking about my willing and clear reach to Dan's bowl of starburst jelly beans when I know full damn well I should NOT be eating sugar. Why do I do that? I had a whole list a few weeks ago of things I "don't" eat. That included sugar and white flour. Yet, today, I had a big handful of pretzels. Yeah, those few snack bits in and of themselves aren't a huge deal. But I only crave sugar and white flour products when I eat them. When I cut them out, I don't WANT them all the time. And it's a mindless grabbing of a bite here, and a bite there, that make things worse for me in the long run. I'm not eating those things because I really want them. I'm not like, jonesing for a handful of banana chips. But after I eat them, a day or two passes, and I see them sitting there on the coffee table, and I'm like "ooh, yum! Banana chips!" And I eat a few more.
I need to quit that shit.
I have a small selection of "healthy" snacks in the house. I'm not inclined to make a quick salad instead of grabbing a handful of yogurt covered raisins or shoving my grubby fist down into a box of pops. But, I should be eating a yogurt or a kashi bar instead.
I'm a slave to my mindless noshing, and I need to break free.
